Southern Christmas Lights Road Trip 2026: From Trail Town Virginia to the Mississippi River
A Southern Christmas lights road trip for 2026 links Damascus, Virginia (Holiday Lights Tour December 1 to 31, parade December 4), McAdenville, North Carolina (lights December 1 to 26), Dahlonega and Helen, Georgia (lit from November 27), St. Augustine, Florida (Nights of Lights to January 18, 2027), Natchez, Mississippi (Dickens Christmas December 11 to 13) and St. Francisville, Louisiana. Plan 10 to 14 days.
Somewhere between a Virginia mountain town and a Florida seawall, Christmas changes costume. In the Blue Ridge it wears Fraser fir and frost. In North Georgia it hangs lights across a gold rush square and a Bavarian-style riverfront. Along the Mississippi it climbs the bluffs and wraps itself around antebellum porches, and in St. Augustine it shines beneath palm trees. Take the scenic route.
This is a road trip built around the South's best small-town light displays for 2026, with real dates, sensible legs and room to linger. Drive it all in two weeks, or pick one leg for a long weekend.
What is the best Christmas lights road trip in the South?
A loop linking Damascus, Virginia; McAdenville, North Carolina; Dahlonega and Helen, Georgia; St. Augustine, Florida; and Natchez, Mississippi, with St. Francisville, Louisiana, covers the region's most memorable small-town displays. The first two weeks of December line up the most events.
The route below runs roughly north to south, then west, and is timed around the parades and lightings featured in our Fall 2026 issue.
- Best window: December 4 to 13, 2026, when parades in Damascus, Natchez and Dahlonega and McAdenville's Yule Log Parade all fall.
- Total length: plan on 10 to 14 days with overnight stops; several legs are long driving days.
- Main highways: I-81, I-85, I-95, I-10 and US 61.
Leg 1: Where should a Southern Christmas road trip start?
Start in Damascus, Virginia, on Friday, December 4, for A Trail Town Christmas Parade at 7 p.m. It is the easiest way to begin the trip with a true small-town celebration.
Damascus, Virginia: Trail Town USA
Where the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail meet, Damascus runs its Holiday Lights Tour December 1 to 31, 2026, best explored on foot, by bicycle or by car. The December 4 parade includes a float contest and the Damascus Loves Dogs Holiday Costume Contest, followed by Santa at the Fire Hall. Stay for Saturday, December 5: the Dashing Thru Damascus Half Marathon starts at 8 a.m., the 5K at 9:30 a.m., and the Polar Plunge and sauna on the Creeper Trail at 11 a.m. That afternoon, the Christmas Market returns to the Damascus Old Mill Inn from noon to 6 p.m.
- Getting there: Damascus sits southeast of Abingdon, off I-81.
- Do not miss: mountain-grown Fraser fir farms around Whitetop.
- Plan it: see our Damascus, Virginia destination guide and VisitDamascus.org.
Leg 2: Is McAdenville worth the drive for Christmas lights?
Yes. McAdenville, North Carolina, is a small mill town west of Charlotte that has been lighting up as Christmas Town U.S.A. since 1956, and it is an easy detour off I-85.
The 2026 display runs nightly December 1 to 26. Cars move slowly along the illuminated route, but walking lets you hear the music and see how neighbors, businesses and community spaces join in. If your timing allows, the Yule Log Parade is Thursday, December 10. Expect traffic on weekends, so arrive early in the evening or visit on a weeknight.
Leg 3: Which North Georgia towns have the best Christmas lights?
Dahlonega and Helen, less than an hour apart, are the pair to see. Both light up on November 27, and Dahlonega's Christmas Parade is Saturday, December 12.
Dahlonega, Georgia
The historic public square is the heart of a North Georgia Christmas: lights stretch across downtown, carriage rides circle the district and locally owned shops and tasting rooms stay busy into the evening. Cabins and inns in the surrounding hills make it easy to stay two nights.
Helen, Georgia
Helen's Bavarian-style buildings line the Chattahoochee River, and the Lighting of the Village kicks off a season that includes a Christkindlmarkt and a Christmas Parade. The compact downtown is easy to walk after dark.
- Smart move: base yourself between the two towns and visit each in the evening.
- Driving note: mountain roads can be slow after dark, so allow extra time.
Leg 4: Where can you see Christmas lights without snow?
St. Augustine, Florida. Its Nights of Lights display wraps the nation's oldest city in white lights from November 21, 2026 to January 18, 2027.
This is the longest drive of the trip, down I-75 or I-95 toward the Atlantic coast, and the payoff is a warm-weather Christmas: palm trees, coquina walls and Spanish colonial streets glowing after sunset. Walk the historic district, then see the lights from the water on a boat tour. Because the display runs well into January, this leg can also be saved for a separate post-holiday trip.
Leg 5: What is Christmas like on the Mississippi River?
Grand and historic. Natchez, Mississippi, hosts its Christmas Parade on December 5 and A Dickens Christmas in Natchez December 11 to 13, 2026, while St. Francisville, Louisiana, celebrates Christmas in the Country.
From St. Augustine, follow I-10 west across the Gulf Coast, then turn north toward the river. If you plan the whole loop around the Dickens weekend, consider reversing the order or flying into one end of the trip.
Natchez, Mississippi
The downtown tree lighting is November 28, and the Christmas Pilgrimage opens historic homes decorated for the holidays. Walk the bluff above the Mississippi at sunset, then watch the city glow.
St. Francisville, Louisiana
About an hour south of Natchez on US 61, St. Francisville finishes the trip at a slower pace. Christmas in the Country brings local artists, makers, music and family activities to town, traditionally in early December, so confirm 2026 dates before you go. Historic inns, gardens and live oaks hung with Spanish moss make it a fine final stop. Read more in our St. Francisville and West Feliciana Parish guide.
How do you plan a Christmas lights road trip?
Lock in lodging for parade nights first, then fill in the driving days around them.
- Book Damascus for December 4 and Natchez for December 11 to 13 early; small towns have limited rooms.
- Most light displays are best in the first two hours after dark, so schedule drives for the morning.
- Pack layers: the Virginia high country can be wintry while St. Augustine is mild.
- Check each town's official calendar before departure, since outdoor events can shift with weather.
